Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers
The moisture level in your home is important for your comfort level. Take these few steps to save energy and stay comfortable.
If you live in a humid area, like Louisiana, you may use a dehumidifier to dry out your home. Basements are prime areas for dehumidifiers. The only tip I can give you for limiting your dehumidifier's energy consumption is to shut it off sooner. You probably don't need to run it all day, so experiment with reducing the run time. See how little you can use it and still be comfortable.
People tend to run humidifiers during cold months as various types of heaters dry out the air in a home. If you have this problem, consider old-fashioned methods to up the moisture content of your home. Hang wet clothes on a clothes rack to dry. Put a pan with water in it on a radiator. Leave the plug in while you shower and don't drain the tub for a few hours. Steam your vegetables. (Pressure cookers do a great job getting moisture in the air.)
A more high-tech way to humidify your home is to vent your electric clothes dryer inside your house instead of outdoors. (Do NOT vent a gas-powered clothes dryer inside, though. It would be most unhealthy.)
