The Best Laid Plans...Might Save You Gas
Plan your trips so you avoid traffic snarls. If you can go to work during non-rush-hour times, do it. (And lucky you for having that kind of flexibility, I might add.) Check traffic cams for jams before getting on the freeway near home if you can take an alternate route. For your vacation drive across six states, pick off-peak times to go through metropolitan areas.
If you want extra credit, plan your routes to drive the fewest miles. Know where you're going before you get behind the wheel so you don't drive around an extra 10 minutes in one of those cul-de-sac neighborhoods saying, "Was it Running Deer Lane or Running Deer Drive." A GPS device could locate things like gas stations and ATMs so you can drive right to them instead of hunting through a new neighborhood or town.
For the really obsessive types out there, you could try what I've heard UPS did. It redid all the routes of its trucks so they only made right turns. No burning up fuel waiting for oncoming traffic for left turns. Now the trucks can do their "right on red" and avoid the extra idle time.
