Fuel Economy - Saving Yet More Gasoline

save money on car air conditioningGiven what's been going on at the gas pumps over the past few--well--years, I've been desparately looking for more ways to save gas. Here are some additional tips I've come across.

Get your car in to see its mechanic. One source I found said that a vehicle that is properly serviced runs more efficiently--maybe as much as 10 percent more efficiently. Check the owner's manual for the schedule of when to service what.

Turn off all the accessories before you park your car, especially the air conditioning and any stuff you've plugged into the cigarette lighter. It turns out that the higher the electrical load on the car, the less fuel efficient it is. Who would have guessed?

And finally, empty out all the stuff you don't really use. For every 100 pounds of weight you add to your car you decrease its fuel efficiency by 4 percent. Look, if you need extra storage, rent a locker or buy one of those mini-pseudo-barns at Home Depot. It has to be cheaper than taking your things for a drive everyday.

If gas gets much more expensive, I'll write another installment on saving money by using a horse and buggy. Until then, enjoy that fossil fuel. Carefully.
