Energy Efficient Exterior Doors

open doorHere are some tips for saving money by keeping your exterior doors as weathertight as possible.

If you have to replace a door (say, if someone accidentally poked a hole in it), look for a door with an EnergyStar® label to show that it is extra efficient.

For new or old doors, put weatherstripping around the whole door frame--top, bottom, and sides--to create a tight seal when the door is closed.

Install door sweeps on the bottom of the doors. Those are the doohickeys that look like they are squeegeeing the floor when the door is opened and closed. You can also get those stuffed animals with long tails that unroll across the bottom of the door to keep out cold drafts. Aside from any aesthetic issues you may have, these cuties won't keep out the cold after everyone in the house has left for the day since no-one will be left to push the tail back against the door.
