Turn Out The Lights

light bulb offThe first tip is the most obvious: Your father was right, you don't own the electric company so TURN THE LIGHTS OFF. About 5-10% of your electricity bill goes into your light bulbs, so this really could make a difference. By the way, this rule applies to both incandescent and fluorescent lights.

So open the shades. Move your chair by the window to read the paper. Turn off the bathroom light even though you know you will be back in 3 hours.

If remembering to turn off lights seems like hard work to you, install motion sensors in rooms where you forget and leave the lights on.
